SCAM ALERT: “Brushing” Scheme
We’ve received reports from citizens who are getting unexpected packages in the mail containing small jewelry items or rings like the one pictured below and usually a card containing a QR code. The sender requests that you scan the QR code with your phone. While we all enjoy getting gifts in the mail, exercise caution.
⚠️ Do NOT scan the QR code or share any personal information.
This is part of what’s known as a “brushing scam,” where scammers send random items to people to create fake online reviews or to collect personal data.
Here’s what you should do if you receive one of these packages:
✅ Don’t scan any QR codes or visit any websites listed.
✅ Don’t provide personal or financial information.
✅ You can keep or discard the item, but it’s safest not to interact with the sender at all.
These scammers are creative and use fake names and addresses, making it difficult to track down the source. It is important to stay alert and help spread the word to friends and family who might be targeted.
