With permission from Mr. and Mrs. Cook, we’d like to share a few photos from a truly heartfelt visit today.
Veteran’s Last Patrol reached out to us about one of our own-Mr. Otis Cook. Not only is Mr. Cook a Korean War Veteran, but he also served as a Laurens County Sheriff’s Deputy from 1973 to 1980. On September 20, 1977, while responding to a domestic call, Deputy Cook was shot in the line of duty. His wife, Mrs. Cook, shared with quiet strength, “I prayed daily for Otis to make it back safely. I knew that night when there was a knock on the door what had happened.” By the grace of God, Mr. Cook recovered.
Today, Sheriff Don Reynolds had the honor of presenting Mr. Cook with a certificate recognizing both his military and law enforcement service. It read, in part:
We commend Otis Cook for his service in the United States Army during the Korean War, and for his service as a Laurens County Sheriff's Deputy. We honor the courage you displayed, especially on the day of September 20, 1977, when you were wounded in the line of duty-a day that stands as a testament to your bravery and devotion.
Your commitment to the safety and freedom of your fellow American citizens is exceptional. We honor your double duty as both a Soldier and a Law Enforcement Officer. We wish you well.
The Cooks welcomed us into their home with warmth, grace, and gratitude. It was a powerful reminder of the resilience, sacrifice, and service that define heroes like Mr. Cook.
We thank you, sir- for your bravery, your dedication, and your lasting legacy in Laurens County.
