Escapee from Greenwood Captured by Deputies

Around 11:10 a.m., Deputies from the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office received a call for service stating that Nathaniel Wideman, who had escaped from the Greenwood County Detention Center was in the Gray Court Area. The caller stated that Nathaniel Wideman was accompanied by another male and Wideman was driving an older blue Ford Taurus. At 11:28 a.m., the vehicle in question was spotted by a deputy on Friendship Church Road near Hwy. 14. As the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, turning onto Frontage Road. After a brief pursuit, Wideman lost control of the vehicle crashing into an embankment. Wideman, as well as 19-year-old Dexter Chambers of Greenwood were taken into custody. Both suspects were taken to Greenville Memorial for minor treatment. Wideman has been transported back to Greenwood County and Dexter Chambers has been booked in the Johnson Detention Center, where he will be charged with Aiding and Abetting, and Possession of Crack Cocaine. “I’m extremely proud of the men and women of the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office. Day in and day out, these deputies work hard to protect the citizens of this county. By having extra manpower patrolling the streets and roads of Laurens County, we were able to apprehend an escaped convict. Teamwork goes a long way.”
