Public Safety Statement from Sheriff Don Reynolds

The Laurens County Sheriff's Office would like to remind citizens of Laurens County Ordinance #537, which establishes regulations regarding negligent discharge of firearms in unincorporated areas of the county.

Under this ordinance, discharging a firearm within 300 yards of a dwelling, church, business, or school is prohibited. Shotguns are subject to a 100-yard restriction. The ordinance does provide certain exceptions, including lawful hunting and target shooting when the specified safety requirements are met.

Additionally, South Carolina law (§ 16-23-440) makes it a felony to knowingly, unlawfully and deliberately discharge a firearm at or into an occupied home or structure. Whether intentionally or with reckless disregard for human life, a conviction can carry up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, with increased penalties of up to 15 years and $50,000 if someone is injured. A person does not have to intend to strike a structure to be charged under this law.

"The safety of our citizens and their families must always come first. I encourage anyone wishing to discharge firearms to do so responsibly, whether at an established shooting range or on property where shooting is lawfully permitted. Reckless or unlawful discharge of a firearm puts lives and property at risk and can result in criminal charges. We ask everyone to be mindful of neighboring homes and families and to exercise good judgment. Let's work together to keep Laurens County safe."

-Sheriff Don Reynolds

Violations of Ordinance #537 may result in a fine of up to $200 or imprisonment for up to 30 days upon conviction.

We encourage all citizens to familiarize themselves with the ordinance and practice responsible firearm safety.
