February 22, 2018

On February 21, 2018 the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office received information pertaining to possible threats at the Laurens District 55 High School.

One incident involved a 17 year old who made inappropriate comments on social media regarding the recent tragedy in Florida. These comments were brought to the attention of School Staff, at which time they immediately notified the School Resource Office and Sheriff’s Office Investigators. The student was arrested and charged with Disturbing a School due to the impact and effect of the social media comments which caused fear throughout the school.

In another incident, which appears to be unrelated, a juvenile student made inappropriate comments via social media which were perceived as a threat. These comments were brought to the attention of School Staff, which immediately notified the School Resource Office and Sheriff’s Office Investigators. This student was charged with making a bomb threat.

“Keeping our schools and our children safe will always be our first priority. We strive to make sure that our future generations have a safe and secure learning environment. Any threats and/or inappropriate comments which cause fear in a school environment will not be tolerated and will be dealt with swiftly and accordingly” - Sheriff Don Reynolds.
